La Pescadora Lodge Hosted Trip Report – 10/22 – 10/29:
“We traveled as a group of 5 anglers to La Pescadora Fly Fishing Lodge in Punta Allen. Mexico from October 22nd to the 29th. As our week began the wind, rain and clouds moved in and the unstable weather created challenging fishing conditions. The winds were so strong that we had to remove the boats from the water because of the fear of them being swamped by waves. The wind was from the North/Northeast which cooled the water temperatures. The low pressure created breaking waves within Ascension Bay. Several of our fishing sessions were shortened by the adverse wind, rain and waves.
Irregardless of the challenging weather, we enjoyed a productive trip. We were unable to fish the majority of the bay because of waves and disturbed water conditions. Our excellent guides focused on protected flats and the lee sides of mangrove islands. This adjustment in our fishing strategy resulted in 6 successful days of sight fishing for bonefish and snook. The cooler water temperatures, heavy clouds, higher water and lower salinity due to rain made the tarpon and permit fishing challenging to non-existent for the week, as these sportfish seek deeper water during cold fronts. However, on day one, our best weather day, Phil Kenney was able to record a Super Grand Slam (Permit, Tarpon, Bonefish and Snook) with head guide Jose Ucan. The remaining guides Danny, Nestor and Rodolfo also worked extremely hard to make our week a success.
The condition of the lodge exceeded our expectations as well as the level of attentive service by lodge manager Lily Bertram. The food was authentic and excellent. Lily’s knowledge of the history, customs and culture of the region initiated fascinating dinner conversations. Even without much sun and plentiful high winds, everyone had a productive and successful trip. Thanks to the “Eyes of our Guides!” We all agreed that fishing within Sian Ka’an Biosphere was a privilege and La Pescadora was an excellent spot. We do expect to return and hope for light breezes and bountiful sun!”
