Playa Blanca Fly Fishing Lodge Hosted Trip Report – Fall 2024:
This Fall, WorldCast Anglers hosted five trips to Isla Punta Pajaros, home to Casa Blanca and Playa Blanca fly fishing lodges. Situated in the heart of the stunning and pristine Sian Ka’an Biosphere in the southern Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico, this region is celebrated for its exceptional saltwater flats fishing that call Ascension Bay and Espiritu Santo Bay home. WCA had the pleasure of hosting 44 clients from across the United States on four trips to Playa Blanca and one trip to Casa Blanca. For many of these guests, this was their first time to Isla Punta Pajaros which made for a very fun and memorable experience. Beyond the many scorpions that were consumed in celebration of a first Permit on the fly, it was refreshing and invigorating to see the island, the experience and the operation through so many new sets of eyes!

Fishing Conditions
The 2024 fall season brought a more extreme and longer tropical storm season in the Caribbean than usual, which directly affected fishing conditions in Ascension Bay and Espiritu Santo Bay. Nevertheless, we were pleased to report that the fishing remained quite good throughout our trips with only a few individual days being directly affected. Our anglers landed the usual diverse array of species, including Permit, Tarpon, Bonefish, Snook and Jacks. The Permit fishing had its moments of brilliance and its inevitable periods of challenge, primarily due to the inconsistency of the weather. When it was stable, fish were found and fed. The variability in conditions added an element of excitement, as each day presented new challenges and opportunities for success. Despite navigating variable fishing conditions due to an extended tropical storm season, our experiences were overwhelmingly positive across our five hosted weeks. The guides worked hard, relied on their experience and instinct and put us in a position to make the most of our opportunities.

Island Experience and Unique Setting
Something that has always been the case but seems to stand out more each and every year is the privacy and seclusion offered by Casa Blanca and Playa Blanca, creating an exceptionally unique experience that sets them apart from other fishing destinations. There are few operations where you can enjoy such a special place essentially to yourself, coupled with the beautiful and comfortable amenities that the lodges provide. The tranquil surroundings and stunning natural scenery enhance the overall atmosphere, allowing guests to fully immerse themselves in the fishing experience while enjoying the comforts of a well-appointed lodge and a highly trained staff. Many of our first time guests were blown away by the quality of life provided in such a remote and disconnected setting. As trip hosts who have been to the island numerous times, it was so cool for us to see it through their “virgin” eyes again.

Changes at Playa Blanca
While there has been quite a bit of turnover in staff on Isla Punta Pajaros in the last two years that has been widely noticed and discussed, the ownership and management is deeply committed to creating the best saltwater flats fishing experience in the region with a renewed focus on the priorities of their repeat guests. They are actively addressing angler feedback and implementing thoughtful solutions to enhance the overall angler experience with a priority on fishing. We absolutely miss the amazing members of the guide staff and management team who are no longer working at Playa Blanca. They had become close friends and were intricately involved and responsible for years of memories on the island and on the water. With that being said, the staff remains dedicated, knowledgeable, and passionate, fostering an environment that prioritizes both enjoyment on the water and comfort off the water.

Looking Ahead
Based on our experiences across these five hosted trips, we firmly believe that Casa Blanca and Playa Blanca still offer a uniquely special fishing adventure. The combination of pristine, private settings and ample physical lodging space, access to incredible flats and backcountry lagoons, and streamlined fly in, fly out logistics make the service and product one of a kind. It is comforting to know that ownership and management are eager to focus their efforts on providing the best possible fly fishing travel experience in the world. We look forward to returning and continuing our partnership with this remarkable destination in the heart of the Yucatan’s saltwater flats fishing mecca.
