Providence Atoll Seychelles Hosted Trip Report – April 2025

“The Seychelles is a small island nation, comprising 110 islands spread out over a massive geographic territory in the Indian Ocean, off of the coast of East Africa. A former French colony, this naturally beautiful and remote country has become one of the planet’s leading examples of eco tourism and conservation, especially in the marine and aquatic world. It has also developed a reputation for arguably the wildest, most diverse saltwater flats fishing experiences in the game right now. In April 2025, WorldCast Anglers hosted a small group of great friends and anglers to Providence Atoll, the largest of the Atolls in the Seychelles where catch and release fly fishing operations have been permitted by the government. This was WorldCast’s third time to Providence and boy did it deliver!

Providence is a 25 mile long by 10 mile wide Atoll with only two landmasses on the entire Atoll – a small island in the Northernmost point called Providence that is barely big enough to fit a landing strip and series of even smaller islands towards the Southernmost point called Îsle de Cerf, completely surrounded by reef. Between those two islands and the encompassing, protective reef barrier lies a mass system of lagoons, flats and coral heads that can only be compared to a maze. Providence is by far in a way the most unique saltwater fishery that I have ever visited in the world that is entirely owed to its very singular and rare geological structure which has then created a very, very special biological system that inhabits it. With such little landmass making up less than 5% of the Atoll, pretty much all of it is underwater for most of the tidal chart. With the coming and going of the water on its daily moon influenced cycle, the life mass of Atoll is on a schedule where its biologically rich and diverse inhabitants each have their schedules, routines and habits. The hardest part of the equation is figuring out that routine, something that even FlyCastaway Head Guide Tim Babich says is practically impossible.

Tim, arguably one of the fishiest human beings to walk this earth, has guided Providence for 15 years and he says that there has never been a day like one before in terms of the tides and weather where the fish behavior is the same as he has seen before. The Atoll is simply so big and features so many variables that can directly affect how the water moves each day, that you essentially come up with a game plan each morning that will rapidly change once you see the water, how is coming in or going out, how the fish are reacting and what the weather might be doing to affect both key elements of the fishing “puzzle”.

I emphasize the size, chaos and complexity of Providence for a very good reason – this fishery is absolutely incredible and healthier than any saltwater ecological environment I have fished or visited in my life. Angling pressure has had practically no visible effect on this Atoll which can’t be said about the rest of the Indian Ocean or the saltwater fly fishing world, especially considering it has been operated on for almost two decades now. Providence’s size, structure, unpredictability and remote location make it arguably the greatest saltwater fly fishing location in the world, plain and simple.

Host to an immense and diverse variety of target species, a day on Providence can feature targeting GT’s on the flats following rays, in the surf ambushing bait or by the hundreds in a school cruising shallow coral gardens following Nurse Sharks waiting to come onto the flats to ambush anything and everything in sight. It is one of the best Trigger Fish fisheries in the world, hosting both Moustache and Yellow Margin Triggers that pop up on the right tides, tailing their faces off on the flats in less than a foot of water, providing some of the most electric and delicate sight fishing that one can ever have. Providence is one of only a handful of locations where you can successfully target Bumphead Parrotfish on the flat with fly rod as well as the sporty Milkfish, one of the greatest pound for pound fighters in the Ocean. Beyond these coveted “bucket list” fish, you can catch trophy Barracuda, BlueFin Trevally, Bohar Snapper, various species of Grouper and even Napoleon Wrasse all on the flats and all on a fly rod. It is MIND BLOWING!

The Fishing Gods and the Weather Gods blessed us in April. When it was all said and done our group had landed almost 50 GT’s including a 121cm specimen, over 20 Triggerfish, numerous Milkfish, dozens of Bonefish including a double digit fish, a single Bumphead Parrotfish, a 50lbs Barracuda, multiple Napoleon Wrasses and hundreds of Bohar Snapper, Grouper and BlueFin Trevally. All twelve anglers on the Maya’s Dugong, our mothership and home for the week, each had multiple moments of absolute fishing brilliance and stardom where the legs can’t help but shake during the catch and grin doesn’t leave their face for 24 hours. It was a very special group to share such an incredible fishery and opportunity with – most of which was their first ever time fishing in the Indian Ocean. I doubt they will ever forget it!

From the daily communication, to the knowledge of the fishery to the tangible skills of sight, poling and landing fish, this group of four guides were incredibly impressive. Providence is one of the most intimidating places to guide in the world. It may be as healthy as any ecosystem left on earth but it takes incredible intuition and experience to be in the right place and the right time each day, something Tim, Stu, CJ and Marko did with a smile on their faces and a few stories to tell along the way.

If I had one week to go saltwater fishing before I died, I would go to Providence Atoll and it is not even close. This trip reminded me of that. It checks every box for me as an angler – wild, beautiful yet scary, diverse and abundant in target species, unpressured and as remote as I want to be as a human on earth. We will be going back and I am already thinking about it….”
