Belize Permit Club – Belize Hosted Trip Report:
Belize Permit Club – Belize Hosted Trip Report | The Belize Permit Club (BPC) is nestled on the Sittee River south of Dangriga and Hopkins. There is something to be said about the combination of staying on a freshwater river in the jungle and permit fishing. It is quite the contrast and a rarity! After receiving and presenting our negative Covid tests, we were on our way; a simple process all things considered this day and age. The flight to Dangriga from Belize City is a 15 min flight down the coastline, always a pleasant sight when coming from the Rocky Mountains. In Dangriga we were whisked to the lodge, where we would remain for the week. The BPC is a no frills hardcore fishing operation that is named appropriately, it has the vibe of a homely guest house and accommodates 6 anglers, 3 boats max. The staff quickly made us feel at home as we sorted our gear for the week.
Wil Flack, the owner of the BPC and the Tres Pescados Fly Shop, a charter service on San Pedro (in northern Belize) was to be our guide for the week. Unlike Wil’s sister operation up north, BPC has a laser focus on a singular fish, Permit. While Wil and I had never met prior to our week together, we quickly sorted through all of our mutual connections and were quickly making plans for future trips. Mike Anderson “Magic Mike” was our second guide and similar conversations quickly ensued. Both Wil and Magic Mike are excellent permit guides as well as teachers. They have a calm demeanor when walking both beginners and seasoned permit anglers through the “in’s” and “out’s” of the endeavor. There were 3 of us fishing this week and we rotated guides and the single boat.
As we jumped up on plane and headed down river we were met by the sunrise at the confluence of carribean sea, which would become a welcomed ritual of the day over the week.
It had been quite sometime since I had fished Southern Belize; the stunning visuals of the permit flats quickly reminded me of what I had been missing. Additionally the actual shots at permit are more often quintessential permit shots. Fish pushing into the tide, feeding in shallow water and tailing.
For the end of January, the weather for the most part during our week was very good. We did have a cold front push through. A foggy memory surfaced in regards to fishing southern Belize; these fish still tail in cold weather conditions? Sure enough, with the rain jackets on top of puffy coats, we saw fishing tailing in shallow water. We even managed to fool one. Just another entry into the permit puzzle.
We had a great week! Multiple fish brought to hand, plenty missed opportunities and some crazy fish encounters. More importantly it was a well needed time to catch up with old friends and connect with new ones.
BPC is a must see destination for those looking for hardcore permit anglers with an intimate laid back atmosphere and excellent guides. Oh, did I mention the boats? The most comfortable pangas you will ever ride in! I look forward to returning to the BPC sooner than later! Be sure to check out upcoming hosted trip webpage for more information and details.
