Orvis Hydros SL Reel Review and Test – Trevor Wine: Every season, new fly fishing gear and tackle floods fly shops and the online world hoping to grasp the attention of anglers and customers. As a fly shop, we recognize it’s hard to differentiate between the plethora of angling gear choices. So, we put the gear in the hands of those that demand the most and the best, our WCA Fly Fishing Guides. We picked our top new products in the WCA Fly Shop for the 2016 Fishing Season. We placed those items in the hands of our guides to wear, use, cast, fish, abuse and enjoy! Simply put, it’s gear that is WCA Guide Tested.
Entering his 10th year guiding at WorldCast Anglers, Trevor spends plenty of time on the water as a guide in Casper to Jackson Hole and Teton Valley. The Orvis Hydros SL reelwas a perfect fit.
“The Hydros SL is a magical large arbor Reel. The highest quality aluminum and light as a feather. The sealed drag keeps water and dirt out. Way to many trout to count have blasted this reel this past guiding season. Screaming run after run and day after day, the Hydros SL reel got pounded and treated like a rental car; without any failure. Now, when I fall a sleep at night, I’m counting trout leaping out of the water, 27 ,28,29,33,34. I look up at sky and puffy Hydros clouds are floating across the horizon. Sweet fishing dreams all night!
I lined the Hydros SL up with a bass floating line and ripped deer hair frog poppers on lake Minnitonka. The Hydros SL loved every challenge those Largemouth Bass and Pike gave her. Landing in the beautiful San Pedro Belize, I was extremely excited to use the Hydros SL on the salt water flats to catch Bonefish, Snapper and Horse Eyed Jacks. The Hydros SL performed like a well trained Sushi chef. Extremely quick to pick up slack in the line and the silky smooth drag releases the line evenly. With a big drag knob, you can adjust the drag by lowering the pinkie finger to move it tighter or looser. Fresh water or salt water this reel will last you many many years.”
